The damage from this week’s fires has been difficult to process from afar. It's hard to register the scale of destruction in LA or really understand what it means to lose everything without experiencing it yourself. This was the first time I used TikTok to follow what was happening, which offered more of a front-row seat. It was also the first time a disaster impacted a friend. My friend Sam Rich lost everything in the Eaton fire, which is hard to believe.

For years, I have had a confusing relationship with Costco. When I ran my farm box business, any giant company selling cheap food felt like a personal threat to my mission. There is a famous story about when Theo and I were early dating. He picked me up from the airport with flowers, but when I noticed the back seat was full of Costco toilet paper, I had a mini-tantrum, which ruined the moment. I know Costco has a cult status.

To be an influencer can often mean you live a glamorous life and get paid to go on trips, try new makeup and restaurants, and share your life with admirers in sponsored posts. It has come to mean you don’t have a specific skillset or other job, but you are ahead of the trends, and millions of people online want to be like you.

I find the holiday cookie season a bit overwhelming. In the past couple of weeks, I've seen many cookie swaps, endless recipe testing, adventurous cookies, and tried-and-true classics. This upcoming week through New Year's is one of the most disorienting times of the year, when any semblance of routine goes out the window, and it’s one holiday meal or gathering after another.

Earlier this week, I was reading Casey Lewis's newsletter, who is the expert on Gen Z consumer trends, and after watching hundreds of TikTok's Christmas wishlists, she had a pretty good sense of what is popular this year. Among the products and themes she listed as being on everyone's list, she commented that Stanely water bottles, which had been at the top of everyone's list last year, were nowhere to be seen. This made me inexplicitly sad.

We are lucky to live in the time of the internet where we can easily connect with likeminded people. I came across Chelsea of A Legume a Day on Instagram and have been obsessed with her content ever since. Chelsea is a true bean fanatic. Chelsea has her PhD in Food Science and Human Nutrition from Colorado State University, where her doctoral research focused on translational efforts to promote bean intake to consumers to advance public and environmental health.

My Thanksgiving gathering is large. My grandmother, at 96, still hosts us in her retirement home, Loomis, in Western MA. There’s my family — 6 with partners, my uncle and his family of 4, my aunt and her family of 4, and my mom’s brother’s family also joins us. Five out of 8 came this year—that’s 20! The evening always goes by in a flash as I try to say hello to everyone and briefly catch up.
