Renowned sculptor, carver and artist Frederick (Fred) Graham has passed away surrounded by his whānau. Graham (Ngāti Koroki Kahukura, Tainui) was born on September 1, 1928 in Arapuni and has been involved in the New Zealand art scene since the 1950s. He died on Friday aged 96. He was considered a pioneer of the Contemporary Māori Art Movement and a key figure in organising one of the first exhibitions of contemporary Māori painting and sculptures in Hamilton.

Homegrown is leaving the capital for Hamilton. Waikato welcomed the Jim Beam Homegrown Festival with open arms this week as the organisers announced Hamilton as its new host city. The next Homegrown Festival will take place at Claudelands Oval on March 14 next year.

The next Homegrown festival is in Hamilton on March 14 next year. Organisers announced in January the iconic Kiwi-only music event would leave Wellington after 18 years.

For the first time in more than a century, kākāpō have been heard booming on the North Island of mainland Aotearoa New Zealand. Iwi Ngai Tahu revealed today that at least two of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari’s three resident kākāpō have completed their first season of booming. Booming is one aspect of the elaborate breeding behaviour of male kākāpō, designed to attract the attention of potential mates.

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, Save the Kiwi and Ngāti Korokī Kahukura have done it again: the 2025 kiwi translocation season has wrapped up in Waikato and it has been another record-breaker. Since February, 232 kiwi were moved from the sanctuary to new homes at Capital Kiwi in Wellington, Tongariro National Park and Taranaki Maunga, exceeding last year’s number of 222 translocated birds. Save the Kiwi chief executive Michelle Impey said the Waikato translocation’s scale was impressive.
