“Lethal, precise, and above all, surprising.” That’s how Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant earlier this month described the strikes that Israel would launch against Iran in retaliation for Tehran’s October 1 ballistic missile attack against Israel. In the predawn hours on Saturday, Israel launched a series of airstrikes against Iranian military infrastructure in and around Tehran, Karaj, and Mashhad, killing at least four Iranian soldiers.

In an unprecedented and historic operation, the Israeli Air Force targeted key military sites in Iran. This escalation marks a pivotal moment, with Iran’s response now determining the course of events. Although Iran’s leadership has publicly vowed to retaliate, significant concerns remain about the risks of a larger regional conflict. Sunday’s Iranian attacks on Israel were a total contrast to the regime’s previous extreme caution in responding directly to Israel and risking a confrontation with the United States. The latest reports regarding the sale of Iran’s Mohajer-6 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for use in the Sudanese civil war, which has been raging for the past year, should not surprise those who follow Iranian arms sales. In recent years,...

On November 8, Brazilian authorities detained two suspected Hezbollah agents in Sao Paulo on the suspicion they sought to attack Jewish targets in Brazil. The plot embarrasses Brazil, which for years ignored Hezbollah’s presence. With Mohamed Abdulmajid, the alleged Syrian-Brazilian recruiter, on the run and more arrests likely, it is time for Brazil to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization. Alas, Brazil remains in denial.

Iran Israel Middle East Nuclear Deterrence Nuclear Nonproliferation Politics & Diplomacy Security & Defense The Gaza war probably won’t change Iran’s nuclear strategy. It’ll make it difficult to reach a long-term agreement, though. Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, which followed the vicious attack by Hamas against Israeli military outposts and civilian villages near the Gaza Strip on October 7, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s position regarding the terrorist attack has become apparent....
