I'm at a red light on a misty stretch of Highway 1 somewhere between San Francisco and Half Moon Bay when I spot a first-generation Rivian truck pulling up on my right. And I am behind the wheel of the 2025 Rivian Tri-Motor R1S SUV, so naturally I give my fellow Rivian driver a nod and gesture for him to roll down his window. “Yo, man! How do you like your car?” I shout. He looks me and the vehicle up and down, then hollers back. “I don’t like it!” He pauses and locks eyes with me.

I was at a Death Grips show at the Warfield in San Francisco when one of my oldest friends showed up wearing a massive cowboy hat and handed me four desiccated—but relatively large—psilocybin mushrooms. “These should do the trick,” he told me, palming them into my hand in one fluid motion. Let’s be real: Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you’re going to ditch your cell phone. And that’s OK! Your handset should be an integral part of any trip you take. Still, vacationing can be hazardous for your phone: pickpockets, roaming charges, and unexpected drops.

In 2023 cars were all about refinement. Automakers looked at ways to make existing models better, faster, more luxurious, more efficient. Sure there were outliers that broke the mold — Lambo built an off-roading beast of a machine in the Sterrato. Honda released a portable scooter that can be carried around like a briefcase — but for the most part it was all about steady improvement.

I’m filling my RV with five gallons of extra gas when a guy wearing nothing but hot pink booty shorts, covered in mud, and smoking a cigarette comes up behind me. “You know what I love about Burning Man?” he asks, unprompted, flicking his lit Newport in my direction. “It’s completely unpredictable.” This is my sixth Burning Man. Just when I think I’ve seen all the blinding dust storms, psychedelic misadventures, and porta-potty horrors that are humanly possible, the most unimaginable thing happens.
