Analysis from the EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring System (CAMS) has shown smoke originating from wildfires in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario has made its way across the Atlantic and reached Europe in recent days. Forecasts show further smoke is set to reach Europe later this week. Smoke initially made its way across the Mediterranean on May 18 and 19, and there were reports of smoke in Greece and the region around the eastern Mediterranean.

A group of Trinity College students were among the tourists on a tour of the volcano when it erupted on Monday morning. The group were on holiday together celebrating their graduation. Alex Stoian, a recent chemistry graduate from Trinity College, said “things started to go awry” soon after they departed a tour bus to explore Mount Etna on foot. “The more you think about it you kind of get into that fight or flight kind of blur,” he told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.
