Mr Mullins died earlier this week at the age of 57 following a sudden illness. He was the executive chairman of clean energy company Amarenco and previously served as the chief executive of Bord Gáis from 2007 to 2012. A member of Fine Gael, he contested the European elections for the party last year in the Ireland South constituency. He had a significant involvement with Bishopstown GAA and Castlemartyr GAA, and was a former director of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Though a small number of far-right candidates won seats in last summer’s local elections, that didn’t translate to support at November’s general election. Mr Harris said the far-right’s “minimal electoral impact” last year showed the “true scale” of support for what he described as a “very noisy” group. He told the Changing Times podcast it is up to politicians, not him, to “win the argument” against the far-right. "I think the proof of the pudding has somewhat been called out.

The Simon Communities of Ireland’s “Locked Out of the Market”report for March found the number of properties available through HAP had dropped from the 46 found in the report for last December. Overall, there were 1,123 properties at any price across 16 areas surveyed, down 9pc from December. In 10 of the 16 areas, there were no available properties through HAP.
