The current delay in driving tests and letting learner drivers continually roll-over their permit year after year without sitting a test is without a doubt affecting road safety, according to Susan Gray of the PARC road safety group. Ms Gray, whose husband Steve was killed by an unaccompanied learner driver in Donegal in 2004, was one of five families who met with Junior Transport Minister Sean Canney at Leinster House yesterday to push for changes in the laws around driving to make roads safer.

Mr Molloy was from Co Wexford but lived in Glenageary in Co Dublin. He held the role of news editor with the Irish Independent when it was owned by Independent News & Media from the early 1990s to 2005. In October 2005 he was appointed executive editor of news, with overall responsibility for news investigations. Mr Molloy was previously news editor with the Irish Press, and started his career with the Wexford People and the New Ross Standard newspapers.
