    Believe it or not, American companies pay to import trash from China, Mexico and other parts of the world. Companies do this to gather enough bottles and cans to meet American demand for recycled bottles, cans and other content. Texas A&M University researchers are proposing a different approach, one that would reduce garbage in Texas: a “deposit refund system” (DRS) to spur recycling. The DRS approach has reduced trash across northern Europe and is used in 10 states, including Iowa and Michigan.

    Chillennium, known as the world’s largest student-run collegiate game jam, returns Feb. 7-9 at the Hildebrand Equine Center on the Texas A&M University campus. Students from across the country will compete to create a fully functioning and playable video game based on a single prompt in just 48 hours. The event is sponsored by the Texas A&M College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts, which includes Game Design and Development in the Visualization program.

    Although extremely flammable, cotton is one of the most commonly used textiles due to its comfort and breathable nature. However, in a single step, researchers from Texas A&M University can reduce the flammability of cotton using a polyelectrolyte complex coating. The coating can be tailored for various textiles, such as clothing or upholstery, and scaled using the common pad-dry coating process, which is suitable for industrial applications.
