The Weekly Longer NIL Thought. This week, an ESPN investigation revealed something I've been warning about for months: the increasingly complex and potentially predatory nature of "NIL contracts" in college sports. These aren't just contracts. They're sophisticated control mechanisms disguised as opportunities.

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought. Sports agents are beginning to consider leaving the profession to become general managers at the collegiate level. This shouldn't come as a surprise as the college sports landscape becomes more professionalized by the day. We should have all seen this coming. Over the years, many one-time agents have determined they would be happier working in a front-office position, and this has been particularly true in the basketball world.

In a significant ruling that could impact numerous pending challenges to NCAA eligibility rules, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia has denied a preliminary injunction sought by University of Georgia baseball player Dylan Goldstein, who had exhausted his NCAA eligibility but sought to play one additional season. The Weekly Longer NIL Thought. The U.S. Department of Education rescinded the "fact sheet" I discussed in Vol. 116. That now-defunct fact sheet counseled that the gender-equity standards for athletic scholarships must also apply to NIL money remitted to college athletes.

Nico Iamaleava’s #NIL saga shows why college sports need a system negotiated between players and schools. Vague deals breed public disputes and chaos in the transfer portal. Clear contracts with clauses that can be enforced are key to creating some form of normalcy.

How might the Nico Iamaleava situation impact how both schools and athletes approach NIL and revenue sharing contracts? I asked fellow attorneys @ryanpmulvaney, @DarrenHeitner and @WinterSportsLaw to weigh in for my latest with @ForbesSports. https://t.co/HvI9BkP1hG

It’s crazy that Nico’s rep (his dad) called a respected journalist a bitch. It’s crazier that days have passed without an apology. I’ve been in the sports biz for a couple of decades and can’t recall a player’s rep publicly calling a journalist a bitch. Terrible form.

The silence from his camp since calling journalist @PeteNakos_ a bitch is deafening. Where are the damage control experts? Seems like Nico has people who think they’re the smartest in the room. But they may be in the wrong room. Will Nico figure it out before it’s too late?

Timely #NIL deep dive that many athletes, parents, and coaches would benefit from reading. A lot of people still have no idea how NIL works and this interview seeks to provide some necessary background.

Huge THANK YOU to @DarrenHeitner for an NIL interview! We dove deep into the game-changing world of Name, Image, Likeness—opportunities, challenges, & what’s next for athletes. https://t.co/O43vqPGxL9
