Efforts to enforce a daytime camping ban at the Belle Park encampment fell short for the second straight day Thursday. On Wednesday the city started applying a parks use bylaw requiring tents and temporary structures to be taken down an hour after sunrise. But just like the day before, bylaw enforcement officers backed off after being greeted with a blockade set up by residents and their supporters at Belle Park Thursday morning.

City officials are hoping for the best, but planning for the worst, as Kingston prepares for the possibility of hundreds of thousands of visitors crowding city streets for next month’s solar eclipse. Earlier this week the city warned residents as many as 500,000 people may arrive in Kingston to view the rare celestial event on April 8. But the truth is, there’s no way of knowing exactly how many people will show up for the big show, says Brad Joyce with the city. And that is making planning tough.

An early-morning crash that saw a truck smash into two Kingston, Ont., homes is linked to a break-in at a business just minutes before, police say. Emergency crews were called to reports a vehicle had crashed into a home in the area of Oak and Victoria Streets around 4:10 a.m.The vehicle, a white Jeep Wrangler, also hit a neighbouring home before crashing into a double garage door at 51 Oak St., police said.
