    Emporia baseball picked up a road sweep at Junction City on Tuesday. The Spartans overcame close outings in both games, winning game one 5–2, before dispatching Junction City 5–4 in the nightcap. The Spartans are 6–1 on the season, and they pushed their current winning streak to six straight games. Lebo-Waverly baseball handily dispatched Lyndon High School Monday in a lopsided twin bill. The Wolfdogs prevailed 11-2 and 20-3, moving to 5-1.

    The spring sports season is in full bloom across the county, with baseball and softball games starting throughout the county schools. Emporia baseball opened the season with a 3–1 record, sweeping Wichita South on Friday after earning a split against Ottawa on Thursday. The Spartans defeated Wichita South 21–0 in the first game, and claimed a 15–0 win in the nightcap. Luke Marshall led the charge from the plate, registering three hits and three RBIs in game two.

    Lebo High School basketball, fresh off a Lyon County League Tournament championship, continued their winning ways, grounding Jayhawk Linn High School 72-10. The Lady Wolves, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A DII, improve to 14-1 on the year and will face a couple of formidable opponents before the month concludes: 2A Lyndon High School and 3A Osage City (14-1). The Lady Indians only loss was in December to Lebo. The Lady Wolves went 11-19 from 3-point land.

    The Emporia High School boys basketball team claimed a 72-46 win over Wichita Trinity in the opening round of the Bluestem Classic Thursday night in El Dorado. The Spartans improved their record to 5–3 on the season, and they will play defending 5A state-champion Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the semifinals on Friday. Emporia’s Rylan Crowell finished with a team-high 16 points. Chase Harrington added 15 and Harry Trelc scored 13 for Emporia.

    Olpe High School girls basketball got by Hartford Tuesday 42-35 in a closely contested Lyon County League showdown. The Lady Eagles moved to 5-2, and Hartford fell to 6-2. Both teams appeared to be coated with a film of rust after the extended break, making it a game of the fewest mistakes and the best defense. Olpe led most of the game, but the Lady Jaguars were only down by three with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
