    A little pride goes a long way. Most of us have that neighbour or family member who has had the same lawnmower or tool forever. After each cut or use, they clean it up and store it away. That’s pride in ownership. For some this was a matter of never having much and being happy with what they did have. In this throwaway society, pride in ownership is less commonplace. It takes work and discipline. Let’s face it, plenty of tools today don’t last the way they used to.

    News that Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) was closing its doors follows a string of retail giants that toppled in recent years. Eaton’s, Sears, Kmart, Zellers – the list goes on of stores most of our readers grew up with. Changing trends, the proliferation of online shopping, and what must be absolutely gross overhead costs for brick and mortar stores, all factor into the demise of old-time retail. But, HBC, that’s different for a number of reasons.

Elections around the globe have been about change and seem to reflect a dose of populism. Far-right parties have seen success, as have non-traditional political actors that bear messages not reflective of customary values. There seems to be an unnecessary edge associated with campaigns today.

Advance polls report heavy traffic, so it can be hoped the Canadian public churns out one of its best turnouts in recent memory. People care about their country and its future. Months ago, the Pierre Poilievre Conservatives appeared destined to clean up, with a majority government in their sites, according to polls.

    They used to joke about the “thumb on the scale” at butcher shops when wrapping up meat and weighing it for sale. Out of step with this week’s column (but nevertheless interesting), undercover grocery shoppers recently found that indeed weighed meat included packaging in its calculation, adding some credibility to this old adage.
