    Leaving home early on Tuesday we caught the name Orwell out of the corner of our eye. A second glance revealed it was a paperback version of Animal Farm. Suspecting it was for one of Chloe’s classes, we wondered aloud how great it was to see students being exposed to a famous work. But alas, it was out of the home library in case there was time for some light reading in between studies.

    One county roads project is nearing completion and others are well underway. Road reconstruction at Wellington Road 29 where it meets WellingtonRoad 18, just outside Fergus, has caused some inconvenience in the past few months, but the result makes it worthwhile. Over the years we have marveled at many county road projects. Needs get assessed, reality is embraced and forward-thinking factors into upgrades. Afterall, roads – specifically those of a regional nature – are about moving traffic.

    A good friend on the west coast is embarking on a cross-country tour this summer. Whether or not he takes the gentle nudge we gave him remains to be seen. Chronicling that tour and sharing the vastness and beauty each province offers seemed a great idea. It’s a challenge we would like to extend to our readers too, as they plan outings this summer. Share what makes Canada great and showcase why we should be proud as a united country. Each region has its natural wonders and spot in Canadian history.

    A little pride goes a long way. Most of us have that neighbour or family member who has had the same lawnmower or tool forever. After each cut or use, they clean it up and store it away. That’s pride in ownership. For some this was a matter of never having much and being happy with what they did have. In this throwaway society, pride in ownership is less commonplace. It takes work and discipline. Let’s face it, plenty of tools today don’t last the way they used to.

    News that Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) was closing its doors follows a string of retail giants that toppled in recent years. Eaton’s, Sears, Kmart, Zellers – the list goes on of stores most of our readers grew up with. Changing trends, the proliferation of online shopping, and what must be absolutely gross overhead costs for brick and mortar stores, all factor into the demise of old-time retail. But, HBC, that’s different for a number of reasons.
