BELWOOD – Township staff will press on with more specific costing of renovations to Belwood Hall after council approved the request at its June 16 meeting. Kasey Beirnes, manager of buildings and property for the township, updated council on proceedings and findings to date, with support from officials at ATA Architects Inc. Belwood Hall was originally constructed in the 1870s. It is used by the community for events, public meetings and private functions and is badly in need of repair.

FERGUS –It was a historic day on June 16 as officials with Centre Wellington Township broke ground on a new operations centre. The project has been 20 years in the making, CAO Dan Wilson said during brief speeches before shovels were picked up and dirt tossed on a pile.

GUELPH – Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) has exhausted all the cost-saving and efficiency measures it can and will soon have to look at increasing staffing levels. Manager of environmental health Paul Medeiros told the board of health on June 4 that because of growth in the region, public health inspectors have pretty much reached the end of doing more with less. “We are doing more while maintaining quality,” Medeiros said.

Leaving home early on Tuesday we caught the name Orwell out of the corner of our eye. A second glance revealed it was a paperback version of Animal Farm. Suspecting it was for one of Chloe’s classes, we wondered aloud how great it was to see students being exposed to a famous work. But alas, it was out of the home library in case there was time for some light reading in between studies.

GUELPH – The local health unit has been working with area partners as the Consumption and Treatment Site (CTS) in Guelph closed on March 31 and the Homeless and Addiction Recovery Treatment Hub (HART) opened on April 1 as directed by the province. Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health’s (WDGPH) manager of clinical services Camille Loucks outlined the transition in her report to the board of health on June 4.
