It was yet another quiet week around town 20 years ago, with the Voice of Pelham’s April 13 2005 front page dedicated to explaining how the province was changing its main funding distribution to municipalities. Pelham, Grimsby, and Thorold were losing all previous grants the towns had received under the old program. The new program, the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF), remains in place today.

Twenty years ago this week, in the Voice of Pelham issue of April 6 2005, the town was digging itself out from an early spring snowstorm. Does this sound familiar? On Monday morning, the heavy snow had been cleared from most roads, but residents were calling Town Hall to complain that their streets had not been cleared, or, when they were plowed that their driveways had been plowed in. The more things change, the more, etc.

The Independent and Free Press, published by Metroland Media, a division of Nordstar Capital LP, has ceased print publication with this week’s edition. It is among 71 community weeklies in Ontario that the company is closing down as part of a court filing announced Friday, Sept. 15, aimed at protecting its assets from creditors. Some 600 employees have received notices of termination, and will not receive severance. The company is also exiting the advertising flyer distribution business.
