It’s that time of year when the lexicon of the meteorologist regularly includes the phrase dew point. This concept is often confused with relative humidity which doesn’t tell us anything about how you’re going to feel. It’s the dew point that is the key to the experience you have when you step outside, especially in the summer. For Boston, dew points have been trending higher over the past two decades, and are likely to continue as our atmosphere warms.

Away from the coastline, early season 90-degree weather on Thursday will be followed by humid and still very warm weather for Friday and the start of our weekend. Some instability in the atmosphere, combined with higher dew points — a measure of moisture in the air — will lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours on Friday.

If you are a regular reader you know that I often talk about the different markers for the seasons. Over the weekend we entered meteorological summer, the warmest 3 months of the year, which will end at the end of August. Astronomical seasons are based on the sun’s position; by that criteria, summer will begin on Friday, June 20. The transitional season of meteorological Spring (March, April, and May) is now over and it’s worth looking back at how the season stacked up this year.

Sunday featured cool temperatures and a Northwest flow of dry air for those of you who don’t like the heat. You’ll have another couple of days of comfortable conditions before the weather begins to feel like summer for the middle part of the week. On average, our first 90-degree day arrives during the first half of June, and this year there’s a chance it’s going to arrive in the first week. Meteorological summer began on Sunday — that is the three months of June, July, and August.

The sixth month of the year brings some changes to the garden, but there’s still plenty of time to plant. With rain in the morning on Saturday and dry, cooler weather on Sunday, it’s a perfect weekend to get into the soil. Typically, I would have planted my tomatoes 10 days ago, but with the wet, cooler weather we just had, my tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants just made it into the garden on Friday.

No need for this. If you can shut your irrigation off you'll save water and The grass roots get stronger as we slowly dry out. https://t.co/17lcRaEcXc
