NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The LSU origin story doesn’t begin in Baton Rouge, but more than 100 miles away on a wooded hilltop in Pineville, Louisiana. Long before Tiger Stadium roared with Saturday football, Louisiana State University began as a frontier seminary and military academy in the years leading up to the Civil War. Dave McNamara takes you to the site where archaeology students are piecing together LSU’s very early history, in the Heart of Louisiana.

ST. JOSEPH, La. (WVUE) - A Northeast Louisiana state park seems like a big of an oasis. Lake Bruin is a picturesque body of water, surrounded by Cypress trees. It offers a quiet spot for camping and an exciting place for fishing, all tucked away in the flat farmland of the Mississippi River Delta. To many, it’s a hidden gem uncovered by Dave McNamara in the Heart of Louisiana. For more, visit the Heart of Louisiana archive here. See a spelling or grammar error in our story? BATON ROUGE, La. (WVUE) - Many of us rarely get to experience a night with truly dark sky, far away from city and suburban lights. Night sky photographers say you don’t really realize how much light pollution there is, until you find a place that doesn’t have it at all.

PONCHATOULA, La. (WVUE) - An old rusting train engine tells the history of Ponchatoula and its boomtown days as a lumber town. Engine No. 3 also stirs childhood memories for some people who, years ago, were able to climb aboard the old engine, as Dave McNamara finds in the Heart of Louisiana. HOUMA, La. (WVUE) - During World War II, the airport in Houma was a naval base for a squadron of blimps that searched for German U-boats, which were sinking American ships off the coast of Louisiana. A huge concrete foundation -- the remains of the blimp hangar -- still is visible today. Richard Cosse manages exhibits at Houma’s Regional Military Museum, which tells the story of the blimp base set up to counteract the Nazis’ “Operation Drumbeat,” in the Heart of Louisiana.
