On your mark, get set — and bring your gently used books to us on Saturday and Sunday. The first phase of the annual Times Colonist book drive and sale is this weekend, when we collect books in the parking lot of the Victoria Curling Club at 1952 Quadra St.Volunteers will be ready to accept your unwanted books. Then you will have two weeks to ponder the empty space on your shelves, and think of the best way to fill that space.

Hey, book lovers, house cleaners, and everyone who wants to help boost literacy throughout Vancouver Island, it’s that time again. Almost. This is to give you a week’s notice of the annual Times Colonist book drive, when we will ask you to donate books to support school libraries and literacy projects. The routine is simple. Next weekend we will accept donations. Then, for 10 days or so, volunteers will sort the books into categories, nicely arranged on tables to make shopping easy.

Here’s an update from the front lines of the tariff war, or at least in the way Canadians are reacting to this nasty dispute between Canada and the United States. As we embrace the “Shop Local – Buy Canadian” concept, we need to remember that putting it into practice is more complicated than the slogan might imply. As an example, Times Colonist readers have expressed concerns about what we publish.

When Barb Handysides opens the monthly meeting of the Royal Oak Historical Association this Thursday, members and the guest speaker will once again share stories of the early years of the area. That’s been the way meetings have gone in the 13 years since the association was formed. But with each passing year, changing demographics are putting more pressure on ROHA and just about every other local history or genealogy group on Vancouver Island.
