Cocke County selected for state PEP program

With a jobless rate of 6.6%, Cocke County had the highest February rate among Tennessee’s 95 counties according to the Tennessee Workforce and Labor Department’s latest report. It was also one of only two counties with a jobless rate above 6%. The county’s rate did decrease from 7% in January.

A dozen or so volunteer student-athletes from Cosby High School eagerly lined up Thursday morning to unload a truckload of brand new refrigerators at the Newport Shopping Plaza. It was their second straight day of unloading as the Frigidaire refrigerators that arrived Thursday represented a second truckload sent by Electrolux to help victims of the September 2024 flooding that impacted so many in Cocke County. The two truckloads of refrigerators were valued by Electrolux at $50,000.

Two people were fatally injured and two others seriously hurt in two, separate motorcycle-involved accidents that occurred roughly 90 minutes apart Saturday afternoon on Highway 25/70 in Del Rio. According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol preliminary report, a 2024 Harley-Davidson trike traveling eastbound on 25/70 at Hudson Way at 3:10 p.m. crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2019 Harley-Davidson motorcycle head-on. All riders were thrown from the vehicles.

Cocke County saw its February 2025 jobless rate decrease from the previous month, however, it now holds the unenviable spot as the Tennessee county with the highest unemployment rate. According to the monthly report issued Thursday by the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development (TDLWD), Cocke County’s jobless rate — which likely remains impacted by job losses related to the severe flooding in September, 2024 — stands at 6.6%, down from 7% in January.
