Newport Police Department officers responded Sunday, May 25, around 12:39 a.m. to a report of an assault that allegedly occurred outside of Michael's Bar on Cosby Highway. According to an incident report, officers found a man lying on the ground with multiple injuries and drifting in and out of consciousness. Two men, identified in the report as Tyler Clevenger, 26, and Cody Earls, 27, were observed by Officer Alex Lane attempting to walk away from the scene.

Memorial Day is considered the unofficial kickoff to summer and around Newport Memorial Day weekend certainly lived up to that moniker as thousands turned out to attend events. For myself and my wife, Deb, the weekend began with the third annual Newport Renaissance Faire on Saturday and from the moment we approached the Cocke County A&I Fairgrounds it was clear this event had catapulted into becoming one of the more anticipated and fun events.

For the third straight month the unemployment rate in Cocke County has shown a significant decrease according to data released Thursday for April by the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development (TDLWD). The reported jobless rate of 4.4% for April reflected the first time since December that the county’s unemployment rate dipped below 5%. Two people found themselves facing charges after Newport Police responded to a report of a domestic assault in progress that allegedly continued on I-40. It also led to an illegal weapon being confiscated. According to a report filed by Officer Dallas Cotter, he was dispatched May 13 to the Marathon gas station near Clevenger Cut-Off Road in response to the reported altercation, but was then advised by dispatch that while en route the subjects had left and were headed on eastbound I-40.
