We have known for some months that the Federal Board was going to decide at its May meeting what to do with Federal Conference in Brighton this Autumn. Last night they discussed the matter looking at feedback from party committees and staff as well as a consultation exercise carried out in March. They had a lot to consider. What if Rishi Sunak called the General Election and we ended up having our Conference in the short campaign?

As an inveterate reader and book hound, I spent a good portion of 2023 with my nose buried in a book. (Or, now and then, my ears buried in an audiobook.)I read 63 books: fiction, nonfiction, science fiction, mystery, poetry, history and probably a genre or two more. A caveat: Two friends tore through 180 books or more. My 63 may not be all that impressive. Or maybe it is. A dismaying Economist/YouGov poll last month found that 5% of the people surveyed read only one book in 2023 and 46% read none.

Milldale Scouts will be running their annual Christmas Tree collection service in January. The group has been collecting and environmentally disposing of Christmas trees in the area for more than 20 years. All donations will go towards building newer facilities at the scout camp site at Mill Lane, Blakenhall. Each tree is £8 and collections will take place between January 5 and 7.
