An autocracy requires that there be only one source of public news. A democracy requires a free press. I will never forget how surprised, amazed, and disappointed I was when watching on TV one of Donald Trump’s 2015 campaign rallies, he pointed toward the pool of news reporters and told the crowd - they are the enemy of the people. Do not believe them - believe me. I realized later, that is one thing that autocrats do to protect themselves and to gain power.
