    SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – Union Catholic's Peter Slingerland recently took a huge step toward becoming an Eagle Scout with the completion of his Eagle Scout project. Slingerland, a junior who lives in Westfield and is a member of Troop 73, has installed fishing line receptacles at Best Lake, a popular spot for both local and visiting anglers in Watchung. The receptacles are specially designed to collect used fishing line, a common environmental hazard when discarded improperly.

    PLAINFIELD, NJ – Union Catholic extended its remarkable winning streak with a dominating sweep of the team titles when the Union County Championships concluded on Friday at the historic Milt Campbell Track and Field Complex at Hub Stine Field. In the girls competition, UC won eight of the nine running events, and finished first in three field events on the way to racking up an astounding  207.67 points to win their 10th straight title. Oak Knoll was second with 60 points.

    NEWARK, NJ - The first elementary school dedicated solely to serving students with autism has opened in Newark, where the number of autism cases has spiked in recent years. The Newark Public School District welcomed local leaders, parents and guardians to celebrate the opening of Branch Brook School, thereby providing more services within the district, on Thursday. In 2024, Branch Brook School reopened as a School for Autism.

    WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield firefighters took their jobs to new heights on Wednesday when they rescued a 7-year-old boy with autism from high in a tree. At about 7 p.m., on Wednesday, the Westfield Fire Department received a phone call direct to their firehouse about the boy, who had climbed 40 to 50 feet up the tree, the department wrote on its Facebook page. Members of the department used an aerial ladder to rescue the child, the post said.

    NEWARK - A vote on a 51-story tower development in downtown Newark has been delayed for the third time as attorneys duke it out over the scope of the project and the potential impact on other properties in the area. The Mulberry Pointe development was adjourned to May 13 by the Central Planning Board on Monday night to accommodate further cross-examination by an attorney representing Paramount Assets and other neighboring properties.
