It has now been seven months since Donald Trump won the election and nearly five months since his wrecking ball began to swing in Washington, taking aim at government agencies, civil society institutions, and democratic norms. Philanthropy has a huge stake in fighting back.

Within a few years of starting Inside Philanthropy, after writing many articles about how foundations needed to change, I had a sobering epiphany: These places weren’t going to change. Most legacy grantmakers, I realized, were never going to substantially increase payout or mainly give multi-year general support or drop their siloed approaches to funding. Nor would they ever align the bulk of their investments — the “other 95%” — with their missions.

As Congress moves to hike taxes on universities and private foundations, I can’t say I’m surprised. Both are easy targets for critics in a populist era. If you’re in any kind of conflict, it’s a good idea to be extremely curious about your adversary. What motivates them? How do they operate? What do they really want? One thing you’ll hear a lot, including from me, is that foundations and top donors aren’t accountable to anyone. Yes, they have to abide by a loose set of rules set by the IRS, but otherwise, they’re free to do as they please. If they screw up, they face no consequences from voters or shareholders or even the media (usually). It’s no wonder that funders are widely seen as arrogant and unresponsive to criticism. In fact, though, this picture of hubris is overdrawn.

As a who's who of billionaires jockey for a place in the Trump oligarchy, with little public concern, I speculate about how attitudes toward the ultra-wealthy might evolve in the next few years and what that may mean for philanthropy. https://t.co/ysDpdwaWa7
