US growth stock funds’ winning streak came to an abrupt halt in 2025’s first quarter. Value-oriented funds outperformed their growth counterparts, while international-stock funds fared better than their US peers. Among all equity Morningstar Categories, foreign large-value was among the top performers. Its 7.8% rise beat the foreign large-growth category’s 6.0% return and was much better than the large-value category’s 4.9% gain.

The era after the global financial crisis has not been kind to international-equity investors. Over the decade through December 2024, the Morningstar US Market Index’s 12% annualized gain trounced the Morningstar Global Markets ex-US Index’s 5%. Since the beginning of 2025, though, the tides have started to turn. While it’s a short period, the performance discrepancy has been dramatic. Through March 16, 2025, the US benchmark fell 4.3%, while the global ex-US index rose 6.8%.

Bonderman died on Wednesday, according to a statement from his family and TPG. A cause of death wasn’t cited. Bonderman was a leading member of a generation of financial entrepreneurs who built fledgling buyout shops into Wall Street powerhouses. Others include Henry Kravis, Steve Schwarzman and David Rubenstein. TPG, the firm he started with Jim Coulter in 1992, had $239 billion of assets under management as of Sept. 30, 2024. Bonderman had an eye for unconventional bets.

David Bonderman, the colorful yet publicity-shy co-founder of private equity titan TPG Inc. who became a billionaire by spearheading massive company takeovers, bailouts of foundering enterprises and splashy investments in startups, has died. He was 82. Bonderman died on Wednesday, according to a statement from his family and TPG. A cause of death wasn’t cited.
