Gaza (Quds News Network)- The death toll from Israel’s genocide in Gaza has reached 48,284, with 111,709 wounded, according to the Health Ministry on Monday, adding many bodies remain trapped under debris and in the streets, where rescue teams cannot reach them due to ongoing Israeli restrictions. In the last 24 hours, 13 more bodies arrived at hospitals, including 9 recovered from the rubble and 4 killed or succumbed to injuries.

Let’s be clear: the forced displacement of Palestinians is not a new idea. US President Donald Trump’s latest proposal to take “long-term ownership” of Gaza, to “clean out” the “mess”, and to turn it into a “Riviera of the Middle East” is just the latest iteration of efforts aimed at ethnically cleansing Palestinians from their homeland. What makes Trump’s comments dangerous is not the immediate threat of US military intervention in Gaza followed by the expulsion of its 2.2 million residents.

Gaza (Quds News Network)- Today, during the sixth batch of the prisoner exchange between Israel and the Gaza resistance, freed Palestinian detainees were subjected to a new level of humiliation. In previous batches, Israeli prison authorities forced released detainees to wear plastic hand bracelets inscribed with the biblical Psalm, “I pursued my enemies and overtook them!” which served as a blatant threat meant to haunt them even after their release.

Rather than serving the public interest by fully exposing the brutal machinations of power, state-corporate media shield Western governments and their allies from scrutiny and focus the public’s attention on the crimes of Official Enemies. Israel’s genocidal attack on Gaza is but the latest example.

A key function of the state-corporate media is to deny reality. They do supply news. But it is no accident that they supply news of a type that covers up the crimes of elite power. However, the appalling violence and destruction being inflicted in Gaza by Israel are simply too great to conceal. We may well be living through an unprecedented era where the vast crimes of the West, and the complicity of major news organisations, have never been more exposed to the public.

It is a historical fact that powerful elites do not wish to be diverted from pursuing their selfish interests by the public. Minimal, unthreatening expressions of dissent may be tolerated in ostensible ‘democracies’. But public opinion needs to be managed, manipulated or, if necessary, simply ignored. After all, as Noam Chomsky has said, real ‘democracy is a threat to any power system’.
