GENEVA — We do not know much about children’s radio consumption. Official radio measurement systems only partially measure this target group and only in a few markets. However, this doesn’t discourage several broadcasters that run dedicated children’s services. In a recent analysis, I identified 22 European radio stations that target children. These stations represent a wide range of target age groups, from babies to teens.

BLANTYRE, Malawi — The Canadian government has partnered with MISA Malawi — the Malawi chapter of the Media Institute for Southern Africa — to empower community radio stations and enhance accountability for local projects. The initiative, “Investigative journalism and Social Accountability,” stems from a CA$69,744 (approx. US$50,120) agreement to foster active citizen and community media participation in local project implementation.

MUET FM 92.6 — Pakistan’s only campus radio hosted by a public-sector engineering university — is seeking potential collaborators to broaden student interns’ perspectives on radio production, programming and effective audience engagement. Based at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) in Jamshoro, the station broadcasts in English, Urdu and Sindhi to make its content accessible to diverse audiences.

Listeners in the south of Gloucestershire, a county in southwestern England, can now tune in to community station Thornbury Radio on DAB following the launch of a new DAB multiplex. The local not-for-profit organization South Glos Digital Community Interest Company (SGDCIC), backed by Thornbury Radio, community donations and support from Thornbury Town Council and Thornbury Rotary, successfully launched its SSDAB service, covering much of South Gloucestershire.

The Broadcast Technology Roadshow travels to Northern Ireland and Ireland at the end of October. The Roadshow emerged from IBC2019 when a small group of non-competing companies — Sonifex, Cedar Audio, Broadcast Radio and Vortex Communications — decided to tour the United Kingdom to allow their regular technology users who could not get to the major trade shows to see their latest products first-hand.

Radio broadcasters are united in their claim to request prominence for their services on digital audio platforms and devices. Prominence means offering users easy access to radio services, often in a privileged position, versus similar audio services. This typically refers to devices such as smart speakers and in-vehicle entertainment services, although it could also apply to audio aggregators on all kinds of digital devices.

WorldCast Systems has announced the expansion of its Ecreso FM AiO Series with two new products and a major software update. The new additions extend the AiO Series’ portfolio up to 2 kW, addressing the medium power needs of broadcasters with 1 kW HR (high redundancy) and 2 kW transmitters in a compact 3U form factor. The new Ecreso FM AiO Series transmitters feature dual hot-swappable power supply units (PSU), two fans, and two RF pallets.

GENEVA — European medium-wave transmitters are going silent. On April 1, the BBC shut down the nine transmitters that had previously brought BBC Radio 4 in AM to the whole country. Since January 2018, the British public broadcaster has started to switch off the AM transmitters for its local stations. Looking ahead, it plans to abandon the band totally by 2027 at the latest. This trend goes beyond the BBC. In the last years, British commercial broadcasters have also switched off AM transmitters.

Every year before the United Kingdom’s summer, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford unveils its Digital News Report. Based on a sizable online survey of more than 95,000 people in 47 countries, representing half of the world’s population, this is the most awaited report within the news industry to understand what is happening with audiences. According to the latest report, on average, 23% of the online population of those countries use radio for news.
