Perfect start to Premier season for Paignton CC

The sun shone warmly from azure skies across the county for week two of the Tolchards Devon Cricket League. Queen’s Park in Paignton was a happy place to be as the home side engineered their second Premier Division win from two starts. The visitors, Heathcoat, were held to a total of 185 all out. Ayabulela Gqamane and George Woodcock capturing three wickets each. In reply, Paignton recovered from 35-4 to reach their target, in the 38th over, for a four-wicket win.

Despite a mixed forecast earlier in the week, sun-laden early summer weather conditions greeted players and supporters for the opening Saturday of the Tolchards Devon Cricket League. Shining brightest, on first view, were the coloured playing kits and pink ball that have been voted in, and will be the order of the day, in this year’s Premier and A Divisions. The inception is somewhat inevitable given its universal adoption across cup and T20 fixtures.

Eighteen weeks await local cricket lovers and the army of passionate and dedicated volunteers who keep the show on the road year after year. Our only local Premier Division representatives this year are Paignton, where Harry Ward is the new captain.

When the Premier Division fixtures for The Tolchards Devon Cricket League were published earlier in the year, many would not have pinpointed the final day clash between our two South Devon representatives as a “winner stays up” affair. But that is exactly how it was at Bovey Tracey Recreation Ground for the visit of Paignton on Saturday. Bovey, buoyed by recent wins over the eventual champions and runners-up, decided to bat, but could not have got off to a worse start.

Heavy early morning rain tried its best to upset the penultimate Saturday in the Tolchards Devon Cricket League, but the weather forecast came true and sportingly allowed play as intended in almost every fixture across the county, albeit with late starts and reduced overs. A nine-wicket win at Exmouth clinched a second Premier Division title in three years for Gary Chappell’s Bradninch and Kentisbeare. A 28-point lead over Sandford means they cannot now be caught.

With three Saturdays remaining in the Tolchards Devon Cricket League, Bradninch and Kentisbeare have taken a huge step towards their second Premier Division title in three years by beating closest rivals Sandford by five wickets at Kensham Park and opening-up a lead of 26 points. At the foot of the table, Bovey Tracey’s great escape hit the buffers but only after a spirited effort at home to in-form Exeter. Bovey let Exeter get too many runs with 297-9, Finlay Hill top scoring with 93 not out.

There are four Saturdays remaining in the Tolchards Devon Cricket League, but all eyes are already on the final day (August 31) at Bovey Tracey, where one fixture could determine which our of local clubs keeps/loses its Premier Division status. For the first time this season, Bovey Tracey moved above Paignton after pulling off the performance of week fourteen, winning by 104 runs at Sandford. Musa Twala’s 76 guided Bovey towards a solid-looking 246-8 at Creedy Park.

Week twelve’s washout in the Tolchards Devon Cricket League probably helped some teams, by giving them a mid-season break, but not all. Many week thirteen outcomes went against form, resulting in noteworthy league position changes at a crucial stage of the season. Neil Hancock’s return to first-team action inspired Paignton, who recovered from 73-4 to post a robust looking 290-8 against Exeter at Queens Park.

Given the uncertainty of the British summer, it is still something of a rarity to have a complete washout in the Tolchards Devon Cricket League. But Saturday’s morning rain, turning heavier by lunchtime, saw cancellations start to appear as quickly as the raindrops were bouncing off the covers across the county’s playing fields. Conditions improved by late afternoon, but the damage had already been done, meaning a Saturday off for all local clubs.
