Steve Witkoff is no ordinary Middle East envoy; not for him the grisly fate of predecessors like Tony Blair or Brett McGurk. Witkoff says he is blessed. He is on a mission, if not from God, then at least the next best thing - which is US President Donald Trump. I used to see him come in, and I used to say: God, I want to be him.

Alle 2.20 del mattino del 18 marzo, ora locale nella Striscia di Gaza, gli Stati Uniti hanno inaugurato una nuova era nella politica mondiale. It was 4am when I stumbled out of bed, half-asleep, to get a glass of water - a simple, thoughtless act. As I reached for my phone, I hesitated. Checking it might keep me awake. At 2:20am on Tuesday local time in the Gaza Strip, Washington inaugurated a new era in world politics. This was the moment Israel timed its attacks on dozens of targets in the enclave to coincide with suhoor, the predawn meal eaten by Muslims in preparation for a day of fasting. The timing was designed to inflict maximum civilian casualties, as families across Gaza gathered to eat and pray during the holy month of Ramadan, even if they had little or no food to consume.

After the Ramadan massacre , we all live in Trump’s Wild West https://t.co/ZVoiMl3xOE

Gaza’s long March https://t.co/69lTr8EVM9

We are only halfway through stage one of the deal, which provides for the release of 33 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinianprisoners. Why would Hamas release any more, if Trump pulls the plug on this ? https://t.co/Hnabj0EqbN
