It would have cost $9.6 billion to permanently house those staying in U.S. homeless shelters in 2022, according to a recently released study by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. “In 2009, the federal government acted on overwhelming evidence of efficacy by endorsing a Housing First policy to address homelessness,” according to the study’s summary.

I am always amused by people who only drink bottled water. I have drunk water from the tap my entire life, and I grew up in a place where the primary water supply was the muddy Mississippi River at Rock Island, Ill. That river was gross. I recall going to the water treatment plant and watching the water go from the river intake to the water pipes. It all seemed to be a very arcane process. Still, I never doubted drinking the treated river water.

Denver’s Regional Transportation District, or RTD, is cracking down on riders of the light rail lines who are hopping on without buying a ticket. Denver City Council member Flor Alvidrez asked RTD Director Michael Guzman about the freebie rider problem Tuesday during the Land Use, Transportation, and Infrastructure Committee of the Denver City Council. He said RTD is aware of it and is doing random checks of fares on all lines.

The Department of Government Efficiency has placed all employees of the U.S. Interagency on Homelessness on administrative leave, according to Ann Oliva, chief executive officer of the National Alliance on Homelessness. Oliva made the announcement Friday in her weekly update to homeless services organizations. “I want to take a moment to thank our colleagues for their service to this nation,” Oliva noted in her newsletter.

The Denver City Council approved Monday a $3.1 million contract for St. Francis Center to continue operating the Comfort Inn and Suites at 4685 Quebec as a homeless shelter. The contract, in effect since December 2023, was extended through the end of this year. The council also voted Monday to sub-lease the hotel to St. Francis Center.
