The folks over at 4-Play turkey calls, not content to constrain themselves to their excellent line of box calls, have debuted a line of diaphragm calls that are sure to make toms close that las tidbit of distance. Four of them in total (true to 4-Plays name), the calls are available individually, or as a four call bundle. The company even went so far as to collaborate with some turkey hunting legends on a few of these designs. First up is the Single Reed Jeff Budz Signature.

The 1892 book, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is a collection of short stories. One of the best-known stories is “Silver Blaze,” a mystery about the disappearance of a famous racehorse the night before a race and the murder of the horse’s trainer. Sherlock Holmes solves the mystery by realising that no one had said that they had heard barking from the watchdog during the night. The dog that didn’t bark is one of Conan Doyle’s most enduring images.

Next week we will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. More than 1,300 members of the Armed Forces, uniformed services and young people will march from Parliament Square to Buckingham Palace. A procession on Bank Holiday Monday will begin with a performance of a Churchill speech and will finish with a flypast including the famous Red Arrows. VE Day 80 street parties, picnics and community get togethers are being encouraged to take place across the country.

I have just spent a few days with two old friends who are leaving a small French village in Normandy after living there for many years. There are all kinds of reasons for leaving, but one of the most important is the decline of the lovely village where they live. The bakery and the bar have both closed and not been replaced. To buy anything you have to drive to the nearest small town. The population is falling and many of their old friends are leaving or have left.
