This year marks a number of very special anniversaries related to the Holocaust: in particular, the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz last January and this week of Belsen, two of the most infamous Nazi camps. Earlier this month BBC2 and BBC iPlayer showed two powerful new documentaries marking these events, The Road to Auschwitz (a BBC2/PBS co-production) which despite its title is mainly about different phases of the Holocaust and was presented by the historian Simon Schama.

I was recently interviewed on BBC4 about the famous BBC interview series, Face to Face, originally shown between 1959-62, and then reborn as part of BBC 2’s The Late Show, between 1989-98. My interview is now available here on BBC iPlayer. The original series of Face to Face was a series of interviews, conducted by John Freeman. It became well known for a number of reasons. Freeman was an accomplished interviewer and a well-known figure in post-war British culture.

In six years, from 1939 until the late summer of 1945, Stalin and Molotov dealt with three British Prime Ministers (Chamberlain, Churchill and Attlee) and three British Foreign Secretaries (Halifax, Eden and Bevin). They also dealt with two American Presidents (FDR and Truman) and four US Secretaries of State (Cordell Hull, Edward Stettinius Jr., Joseph Grew and James Byrnes. The last three Secretaries of State lasted 208 days, 5 days and 1 year and 202 days.

A Level 2 advisory, indicating the need for increased caution, the advisory specifies all the usual precautions, such as to avoid walking alone at night, to avoid answering the door for strangers and to avoid resisting any robbery attempts.
