    A speeding driver died and his passenger was injured in a fiery crash along Highway 101 north of Santa Rosa early Sunday, authorities said. The driver was headed north around 4:15 a.m. when he lost control of an Infiniti sedan and veered off the highway near Dry Creek Road, causing the car to slam into a tree and catch fire, the California Highway Patrol said. Several 911 callers reported that the driver was speeding before the crash.

    The family of a man who was fatally shot by a Berkeley police officer in 2023 when, police video shows, he nearly ran over the officer filed a lawsuit against the city claiming the shooting amounted to excessive force. The wrongful death lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court, stems from the police killing of David Bonino II on Grayson Street near Seventh Street in the early morning of Nov. 6, 2023. Berkeley officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit.

    A 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting a man in Oakland last month, police said. The teen, whose name was withheld, was arrested for allegedly shooting Ponciano "Chano" Tule Bernal, who was gunned down on Foothill Boulevard near 11th Avenue around 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 26, police said. Paramedics and officers tried to save Tule Bernal, but he died at the scene. Police said prosecutors filed criminal charges against the teen but did not elaborate.

    Matthew Muller, the man who abducted Denise Huskins in Vallejo in 2015 in a high-profile case police wrongly called a hoax, faces new charges in two 2009 sexual assaults in Mountain View and Palo Alto.
