    Kinley Keller, Davenport: senior, outfielder - Keller, who is signed with Mississippi State, went 6 for 9 with two home runs, eight RBIs and six runs in wins against Bandera (17-3) and Wimberley (16-13). Keller had a walk-off three run homer against Wimberley in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jay's Esperanza Amezquita recorded 16 strikeouts in a 7-2 win against Eagle Pass Winn.

    Smithson Valley senior Mia Perez is wrapping up her high school career at the same place where her college career will begin with three gold medals in hand. Perez, a Texas signee, won the girls 800 and 1,600-meter runs and anchored the Rangers' win in the 4x400 relay at the Region IV-5A/6A meet held Saturday at Heroes Stadium. Perez's time in the 800 (2 minutes, 9.24 seconds) was nearly as good as her state best 2:09.02 she recorded at March's Texas Distance Festival at Southlake Carroll.

    John Williams III's meteoric rise took another big step up Friday morning as the Steele senior shattered nine-day old city record in the triple jump with a mark of 50 feet, 9 1/4 inches to win at the Region IV-6A/5A championships at Heroes Stadium. He won the event by nearly five feet and had set the previous city record (49-11 ¾) at last week's area meet. He also surpassed the regional record (50-3 3/4) set last year by Round Rock's Xavier Drumgoole, who is now at Stanford.

    Reigning state champion Smithson Valley rallied with a 316 on the second round to complete a two-round 629 to claim the Region IV-5A boys golf championship by one shot over McAllen Memorial on Thursday at Champion Lakes Golf Course in McAllen. The Rangers sat six shots behind Memorial at 313 after the first round and before coming back to win their third regional title in a row. Sean Mendez (153) placed fifth and Hayden Gold tied for ninth (158) to lead Smithson Valley.
