On April 19, 1775, a group of farmers organized as Minutemen in Concord, Mass., fired the "shot heard 'round the world" to mark the start of the American Revolution. Ralph Waldo Emerson first used that memorable phrase to describe the event in his poem "Concord Hymn." The Revolutionary War "shot," which turns 250 this year, also marked the start of writers using the phrase to describe other things — some of which may not stand up to the level of importance as the original.
