    Russia’s United Engine is aiming to complete certification of the Aviadvigatel PD-8 engine, developed for the Yakovlev SJ-100, by the end of the year. Flight-testing of the PD-8 – using a modified Superjet 100 airframe – commenced in mid-March. United Engine chief Alexander Grachev mentioned the certification timetable for the powerplant as the company detailed its implementation of domestic software for engine parts design and production preparation.

    Istanbul’s international airport has implemented a triple-independent runway operation, which will increase hourly traffic capacity from 120 to 148 aircraft movements. The airport’s operator, IGA, claims the hub becomes the first airport in Europe to operate such a system. It demonstrated the triple-runway introduction on 17 April with simultaneous departure of three Turkish Airlines flights at about 11:20.

    Airbus has emphasised to pilots that rudder pedals should not be used to counter turbulence- or vortex-induced roll, and to ensure any high-load event is documented and promptly reported. The airframer has highlighted an incident involving an A320 which, during a climb from 30,000ft to 36,000ft, unexpectedly rolled into a 52° right bank. Its pilot countered with both the sidestick and rudder pedals.

    East Russian carrier Aurora Group has been granted an operating certificate for a subsidiary which will focus on unmanned aerial vehicles. Aurora Group claims the division – known as Aurora BAS – is the only such company in Russia established with an airline at its foundation. It states that the operating certificate, following assessment by federal aviation regulator Rosaviatsia, is formal confirmation of its readiness to carry out UAV services and “develop a new direction”.
