Conditions in the ro-ro shipping sector continue to soften, according to sector analyst and data provider Esgian. In March, daily time charter rates fell month on month by 12 percent, ending Q1 2025 at USD60,000 per day on average. Further declines are expected in the months ahead. The analyst said that time charter rates for ro-ro vessels, on average, are now more than 50 percent lower than seen at the market peak at the end of 2023.

GPO Heavylift successfully completed a significant transatlantic project, transporting Prysmian’s cable laying barge Ulisse from Pikkala, Finland to Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Completed in January 2025, the project presented several challenges. Icy Baltic waters and unpredictable North Atlantic winter storms made the 4,500 nautical mile voyage altogether more treacherous. GPO Heavylift worked to ensure the safety and stability of the sensitive cable laying equipment throughout the journey.

On April 9, US president Donald Trump signed an executive order that aims to revitalise US shipbuilding and strengthen the US-flag fleet. The order directs the creation of a maritime action plan to boost the USA’s maritime industries. During the joint address to congress, Mr Trump vowed to “resurrect the American shipbuilding industry, including commercial shipbuilding and military shipbuilding.” He added: “We used to make so many ships.

Antonov Airlines, in collaboration with transport engineering specialist Fagioli, completed the transatlantic transportation of the habitation and logistics outpost (HALO) module – the first component of the future lunar space station Gateway. The HALO module was transported aboard Antonov’s AN-124-100 aircraft from the Thales Alenia Space facility in Turin, Italy, to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona, USA.
