When Republican Governors Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas and Glenn Youngkin of Virginia and Democrat Governors Gavin Newsom of California and of New York all agree on an education reform, the idea must be either very right or very wrong. As a longtime social scientist and former middle and high school teacher, I believe their support for severely restricting or banning smartphones in schools is long overdue, justified by practical experience, social science and recent successes.

Political leaders push their most controversial ideas when no one is looking. Late on Friday afternoon, Oct. 6, in the middle of the Phillies playoff run and less than 48 hours before the Eagles-Rams game, the Philadelphia Board of Education released a devastating report investigating racial bias in its handling of charter schools. Charter school critics will point to the failure to prove allegations of racial bias in district decisions to close individual Black-run charter schools.

The last three years have been challenging for teachers. As a new school year begins, it is important to take stock of where we are. Our research suggests what teachers need most is support from their school leaders and, on this and many measures, Virginia’s teachers are faring better than teachers in other states. We have spent the last three years surveying and interviewing teachers to understand their experiences during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

A survey of teachers reveals a surprising reason teachers consider leaving the profession and what school leaders can do to help. News about teacher shortages is ubiquitous. Much of it focuses on issues of high stress, testing, pay, politics, and the myriad of other challenges teachers face (Schmitt & deCourcy, 2022). The pandemic drove many educators from the profession by changing the definition of schooling itself (Marshall, 2022).

As we approach the new school year, it is important to take stock in where we are and how teachers are feeling. Our research suggests that teachers need most right now is support from their school leaders. We have spent the last three years surveying and interviewing teachers to understand their experiences during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
