“Stay (I Missed You),” Lisa Loeb’s chart topper first released in 1994 with the movie Reality Bites, is in the long lineage of breakup songs, but in many respects is far from a conventional pop song. It has no real chorus and doesn’t even follow a repetitive pattern of verses or other sections, as it goes from a quiet intro to a full-band groove, back and forth several times.

Then at some point, restaurant owners realized they could serve potato chips instead, and make even more money by up-charging for fries. In most cases, they bought the chips in bulk and tossed a handful on each plate.

A little retribution for the many transgressions put upon me by a strange, cruel world. Payback for years of unequivocal terror at the hands of blood-sucking parasites. An attempt to beat back the vermin that plague us on a daily basis. One small step for a man. One giant leap for mankind.

I was so hammered that I slept like a dead man, just not long enough. I stopped paying attention to the news fairly early on in the evening, but long enough to predict the inevitable. I stayed up, smoking and drinking, just spinning out, before finally calling it quits around 3am.
