When my family and I − husband and two dogs − moved from Florida to Tennessee in 2014, we stopped at the rest area off Interstate 24 in Chattanooga. A sign reading "Tennessee The Volunteer State Welcomes You" greets visitors there and made us feel immediately at ease, embraced and welcome.

I rarely got in trouble when I went to Catholic school from first through eighth grades, but one time I earned detention − called Justice Under God, or JUG − because I wore white socks instead of the mandatory brown or black socks with my uniform. Depending on the day, we wore gray slacks; a blue or white button-down shirt; blue tie; blue blazer; and black or brown shoes, belts and socks. Every day at the Hardey Preparatory School for Boys in Chicago.
