    Plans to build an indoor climbing centre at a regional daily’s former office have been approved. City of Wolverhampton Council has given the green light to the devleopment at the old Express & Star press hall in Queen Street, Wolverhampton. The offices, home to the Express & Star for more than 140 years, were left empty after staff moved to the city centre’s Mander House in 2023. Permission had already been granted for part of the building to be turned into apartments.

    Student journalists are set to discover which among them will win paid work with a daily newspaper this week. Glasgow-based daily The Herald has announced the shortlist for its Student Press Awards 2025, with the Student Journalist of the Year title’s winner receiving a four-week paid internship with The Herald this summer.

    A council has launched a new local news title for the town it serves. Builth Wells Town Council has launched the newsletter, which will be published quarterly. The title has been launched by the authority to “inform the community about what the council does, as well as other areas of interest.”Builth Wells is already covered by at least two local news titles including the Powys County Times and Shropshire Star. Reach plc also has an In Your Area page dedicated to the town.

    A daily newspaper dropped its online paywall for the weekend to mark a regional sporting event. The Irish News made all of its web content free to read in honour of Gaelic football’s Ulster Senior Football Championship final between Armagh and Donegal. The ‘all access weekend’ entitled readers to news, business, sport, culture and entertainment coverage. In exchange, they had to register an account with the Belfast-based News.

    A family-owned weekly has been put up for sale with a warning that its future looks “far from certain”. The Shetland Times is seeking a new owner, with current proprieter Robert Wishart saying “there is a risk that Shetland will lose its only weekly newspaper” unless a buyer is found. According to a report in rival online title the Shetland News, the Times employs around 35 staff.
