    A long-serving weekly newspaper sports editor has been made redundant after 15 years with a regional publisher. Russell Claydon has confirmed he had lost his job as sports editor at the Bury Free Press and four of its Iliffe Media sister titles in Suffolk. As a result of the axeing, there are now no sports reporters based at the Free Press offices in Bury St Edmunds.

    An independent publisher has revealed it is set to invest further in newspaper offices. Tindle Newspapers has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining town centre premises after refurbishing the office of the Wellington Weekly News, in Somerset. The refurbishment comes after other Tindle titles in the South-West of England, including the Cornish and Devon Post and the Mid-Devon Advertiser, moved into new town centre premises in recent years.

    The new chief executive of Reach plc has struck an optimistic note in the company’s first financial update since he took over. Trading figures for the three months to the end of March quarter showed the publisher’s overall revenues down 3.7pc compared to the same period the previous year, although digital revenues rose 1.6pc. Chief executive Jim Mullen left at the end of the period, to be replaced by the group’s chief revenue officer Piers North.

    A new job has been created as an award-winning independent weekly seeks to raise funds for its journalism. The Camden New Journal is looking for a new staff member to run its fundraising and events operation. It comes after the New Journal triumphed in the News Brand of the Year (Small) category at the recent Regional Press Awards. In a column advertising the new role, the New Journal said it came during the “toughest financial climate ever known for local media”.

    A daily newspaper has joined forces with 23 leading charities to urge the Scottish Government to take “decisive action” on child poverty. The Herald yesterday published an open letter to First Minister John Swinney calling for the Scottish Child Payment to be increased to £40 per week – from £27.15. The call comes after the newspaper revealed that at least 80,000 children in “very deep poverty” in a series of articles entitled Scotland’s Forgotten Children: Poverty in Focus.
