In 1940, Thomas Wolfe penned a book titled “You can’t go home again.” Wolfe obviously never met Berkeley High girls basketball coach Crystal Peace. More than two decades after completing her playing career at Berkeley, Peace has delivered something that no other girls basketball coach has ever done — a state championship. Berkeley held off Greenwood 60-54 to win the Class AAAAA Division II state title, completing the best season in school history with a 24-4 record.

What seemed like an obscure, meaningless 6-0 scoring run for the Blythewood Bengals at the end of the third quarter turned out to be the difference in the Class AAAAA Division I state title game against Summerville in Florence. Buoyed by the run, the Bengals quickly opened a 10-point lead and never looked back, defeating Summerville 62-56 to win their first-ever state title. Blythewood finishes the season with a 29-2 record, while Summerville closes out a 24-4 season.

The stay was short-lived for the Charleston Southern men’s basketball team at the Big South Conference Tournament in Johnson City, Tenn. The Buccaneers lost their first-round game to UNC Asheville, falling 80-60. CSU closed the season on a five-game losing streak and finished with a 10-22 overall record. UNC Asheville, which swept all three games against CSU this season, advanced to the semifinals against the Winthrop/Longwood winner.

After winning three consecutive Class A titles, the Military Magnet girls basketball team saw their streak end last season, losing in the Lower State finals. A new streak began on March 6. Military Magnet regained their top spot in Class A, defeating Lee Central in the 2024-25 state finals, 59-40, at the Florence Center. The Eagles finish this season with a 26-5 record. “We prepared for today all season with the schedule that we played,” Eagles coach Nathaniel Taylor said.
Berkeley girls, Goose Creek boys advance to AAAAA Division II basketball finals

The Class AAAAA Division II Lower State finals for boys and girls basketball was a Berkeley County affair on March 5 in the Florence Center. The Berkeley girls team advanced to its first-ever state championship game with an impressive 67-32 win over North Myrtle Beach. The Stags are 23-4 overall and will play March 8 for the state title. The boys matchup featured two teams from Berkeley County as Region 7-AAAAA rivals Berkeley and Goose Creek met for the third time this season.
