Two defending state champions began the Class AAAAA Division I baseball state championship series on Tuesday night on James Island. James Island won the AAAA state title last season, while Lexington won the AAAAA championship. Both schools were bumped up to the new division by the South Carolina High School League. Game 1 was what fans expected in a championship game, and James Island sent the hometown fans home with a smile. But it wasn’t easy.

Summerville High’s softball team captured Game 1 of the Class AAAAA Division I state championship series with Byrnes High, winning 3-0 on May 26. Summerville improved to 33-0 this season and extended its winning streak to 83 consecutive games. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be at Byrnes on May 28. A third game, if necessary, would be at a neutral site on May 30. “Tough game, but that’s what you expect when you reach this point of the season,” Summerville coach Heather Tucker said.

Oceanside Collegiate and Philip Simmons captured state championships in boys golf in state tournaments held earlier in the week. Oceanside Collegiate won the Class AAA title, its third state championship, while Philip Simmons won its first championship with a win in Class AA. For Oceanside Collegiate, the championship capped a great season that saw the Landsharks win five tournaments, including the state tournament.

Though it’s rarely mentioned within the team, the Summerville softball team enters the Class AAAAA Division I state championship series against Byrnes riding an 82-game winning streak. “We don’t really talk about the streak,” Green Wave coach Heather Tucker said. “There is no reason to put any more pressure on this team. Getting to the finals is pressure enough.

Happy moms day to all the moms...my mom died 10 yrs ago...she was 4-11 tall and a wonderful pianist...her ability to make use of whatever she had to deal with 4 sons helped us grow into men...even the curling iron as I can attest to 😆 take care of my 2 boys up there ..miss ya
