    The federal government spends more than $10 billion dollars in South Carolina during an average month, an amount that rivals the state's yearly revenue from income and sales taxes. While high-income states including California and New Jersey typically send more to the federal government than they get back, a 2024 Rockefeller Institute of Government study concluded South Carolina was receiving $1.67 for every dollar paid in federal taxes.

    In the most recent full budget year, 2024, $120.17 billion in federal funding was spent in South Carolina. Another $10 billion was obligated for grants and contracts that weren’t yet paid out that year. The money supports 670 different programs in the state and pays more than 25,000 federal civilian employees. So, where did all that money go? The largest chunk of that money, by far, pays for Medicare health insurance programs that primarily serve those 65 and older.

    South Carolina had one of the fastest-growing populations in the U.S. in 2024 as people relocated from other states, and now fresh estimates from the Census Bureau show where they landed. The greater Myrtle Beach, Spartanburg and Hilton Head areas were favorite targets and all three saw some of the most rapid population growth in the nation.
