    Rail Live returns next month with a fantastic line-up of speakers set to appear, including Rail Minister, Lordy Hendy, and Network Rail Chief Executive, Sir Andrew Haines. The two-day event will be held at the Porterbrook-owned Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre in Warwickshire on June 18-19. Thousands of people have already registered to attend Rail Live 2025 after last year’s event attracted more than 7,000 industry professionals. More than 300 exhibitors will also be attending.

    The minimum age to become a train driver is to drop to 18, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced. Since 2010 drivers have had to be at least 20 years old, but the UK is now set to follow the likes of France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland in allowing 18-year-olds take up the profession.

    The Scottish government has announced it will scrap peak fares from September 1. A 12-month trial ran between October 2023 and September 2024, during which demand for rail travel increased by around 6.8%. Speaking to the Scottish Parliament on May 6 while presenting his party’s Programme for Government for 2025-26, First Minister John Swinney (SNP), said: “Last year, in the face of severe budget pressures, we took the difficult decision, to end the peak fares pilot on our railways.

    Plans for a new station at Golborne have been approved more than 60 years after the Greater Manchester town’s last station closed. Wigan Council approved plans for a new £32 million two-platform station on April 30. Transport for Greater Manchester will now work with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Wigan Council to develop a full business case and detailed design.

    Universal’s new UK theme park is set to lead to the expansion of a station being built on the Midland Main Line. The 476-acre site is between the forthcoming Wixams station and the existing Kempston Hardwick station on the Marston Vale line. Enabling work at Wixams started last September after planning permission for a two-platform station with 234 parking spaces was given in March. So far only a worksite car park constructed.

This was an enjoyable interview. Greater Anglia has been the UK's top-performing TOC for a couple of years, so it's interesting to hear what the man at the top hopes for from nationalisation with the operator set to be taken over by DfT Operations Ltd later this year.
