    FirstGroup has confirmed it has agreed the lease of five Class 222 DMU sets for its new London Euston-Stirling open access service. The sets, currently in use with East Midlands Railway (EMR), will be leased from Eversholt Rail in a deal that runs until the end of the current track access agreement in 2030. The company, which currently has an order with Hitachi for 14 new trains, will consider using electric or bi-mode units should its track access agreement be extended.

    The first section of platform at HS2’s Old Oak Common station has been installed. Six platforms are being built in the underground box where the new line will connect with the Great Western Main Line. A new station on the GWML will have eight platforms. Each HS2 platform will be long enough to take 400-metre-long trains. Old Oak Common is the first location on the high-speed route to have platforms installed.

    A Class 66 has been renamed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators. GB Railfreight 66728, initially named Institution of Railway Operators in 2008, had its name updated to reflect the organisation’s Royal Charter status (awarded in 2021) in a ceremony at London Waterloo on May 28.

    The first known working of a Class 91 through the Severn Tunnel took place on May 25. Europhoenix’s 91117 was sandwiched in the middle of the overhead line equipment test train that started out from Swindon at 1938 before making to return trips between Bristol Parkway and Severn Tunnel Junction. From there it returned to Swindon. The train then made two return journeys to Reading, getting back to the Wiltshire town for the final time at 0151 on May 26.

    A Transport for Wales train has collided with a tractor and trailer on a farm crossing near Leominster. The 0830 Manchester Piccadilly-Cardiff Central service hit the vehicles on a farm crossing on the Marches Line in Herefordshire, between Woofferton and Leominster, just before 1040. British Transport Police said six people were assessed by paramedics, but injuries were “not thought to be serious”. RAIL understands that includes the driver.

This was an enjoyable interview. Greater Anglia has been the UK's top-performing TOC for a couple of years, so it's interesting to hear what the man at the top hopes for from nationalisation with the operator set to be taken over by DfT Operations Ltd later this year.
