Fibre optic cables will be laid along four main lines from early next year to improve internet connections for customers and tackle tunnel blackspots. The Department for Transport (DfT) and Network Rail have announced a partnership which includes Neos Networks (a business-dedicated mobile network) and Freshwave (a connectively infrastructure provider) to upgrade rail telecoms.

Plans for a new route to and from London Paddington via Abergavenny, Pontypool & New Inn, Cwmbran, Severn Tunnel Junction, and Bristol Parkway were announced on June 6.

Go-op has announced its intention to use Class 769 bi-mode units on its open access regional services. The co-operative open access firm had initially planned to use Class 150s or ‘153s’ on services between Swindon and Taunton via Melksham and Westbury. Several Porterbrook-owned ‘769s’ which were previously used by Great Western Railway and Transport for Wales are currently off-lease.

London Underground’s brand-new Piccadilly Line trains will not enter service until the second half of 2026, almost a year later than planned. The first of 94 new trains were due to carry passengers before the end of 2025, but Transport for London (TfL) has said testing will take longer than originally planned. TfL said that since the first unit was delivered in October 2024, engineers have identified and understood the challenges that need to be overcome before they can enter service.

More work to prepare parts of the Midland Main Line for electrification is taking place in June and July. Over six consecutive weekends from June 21/22-July 26/27, sections of the route between Wigston (the northernmost point of overhead line equipment at present) and East Midlands Parkway will be lowered to accommodate future wires. Network Rail said this would avoid having to demolish and rebuild bridges.
