SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Children at Shawnee Elmwood School can learn more about the area’s native habitats thanks to a trailblazer of a different kind. Mia Kohli recently received her Eagle Scout, making her the first female from the Great Oaks District to join the ranks since Scouts BSA began admitting women ages 11 to 17 in 2019. The Great Oaks District is part of the Black Swamp Area Council of Scouting America, service youth in Allen, Hardin and Putnam counties.

Les Bowen remembers playing on the escalators inside the old Lazarus store at the Lima Mall as a mischievous child. “We’d come back to play on the escalator — up and down, run up the down or down the up,” he recalled of his trips with his aunt and uncle. That memory came back to him as he thought about the last time he saw the escalators inside the iconic tower, which started to come down to demolition crews this week, nearly two months after the old Macy store’s tear-down began in April.
