    The young boy who died when a boat capsized off the South Taranaki coast is being remembered for his “zest for life”. Six-year-old Zane Milham, his father and stepmother were aboard the boat when it got into trouble off the Pātea bar on Sunday morning. Two people died and their bodies were recovered about 11.30am. A third person was taken to hospital. Pātea Area School principal James Davidson told the Herald Milham’s death had “deeply affected” the school and community.

A shopper told the Herald she had to leave her supermarket shopping on the conveyor belt about 20 minutes ago when a loud announcement came over the mall intercom.

    New Zealand soldier Shan-Le Kearns has been killed fighting in Ukraine. The 26-year-old’s mother told 1News it would take at least six months for her son’s body to be recovered. Images of the soldier’s body have been shared on Russian Telegram channels. Kiwi soldier Shan-Le Kearns has died fighting in Ukraine.     MetService says the wild weather is forecast to ease today. Severe winds gusting up to 150km/h battered Wellington, ripping off roofs and cancelling flights. Selwyn and Christchurch declared states of emergency after heavy rain caused widespread flooding. Kiwis are counting the cost after wild weather tore across the country, bringing flooding and slips and forcing self-evacuations yesterday. A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they received 85 total weather-related calls overnight.
