Eight firefighter crews are still battling a blaze in a government building in Auckland, more than three hours after it began. Fire and Emergency incident controller Shane Munro said the fire in the Ministry of Social Development office in Glen Innes was contained at 10.30am. “We responded to the fire at around 7am, and had 15 crews and additional support vehicles at the height of the blaze.” Eight crews and fire investigators remain at Mayfair Pl, checking for hotspots and dampening them down.

A schoolgirl who suffered a gash on her head and concussion in a bus crash said one second her friend was sitting beside her at the back, the next she was flying to the front. Eight people, including the 14-year-old Rosehill College student who suffered a gash to the back of her head and a concussion, were injured after a Ritchies bus smashed into a tree on Elliot St, Pahurehure, just before 9am.

A bus has smashed into a tree on Elliot St, Pahurehure. Five people have been hospitalised after a school bus smashed into a tree in South Auckland. Police said others are being treated at the scene after the incident on Elliot St, Pahurehure, just before 9am. Photos from the scene show the front of the Auckland Transport bus with its windscreen completely smashed, wedged against a tree. The police spokesperson said all passengers were now off the bus and the vehicle was partially blocking the road.

The University of Auckland is considering awarding Kyle Whorrall, an entomology student killed in Auckland, a posthumous PhD given he was just three months from finishing his studies. Whorrall, 33, died after being attacked while sitting at a bus stop in Meadowbank on April 19. A 16-year-old has been charged with his murder. His mother, Carole, attended the memorial before she returned home with her son’s body.
