    The New Zealand firefighter’s union are saying the major blaze in Auckland’s CBD should be a wake-up call for Fire and Emergency after they had to call up an aerial truck from Hamilton to fight the blaze. The truck down south had to be put back together hurriedly as it was going through a rebuild when the blaze broke out, before it had to travel 100km to Auckland to help crews battle the fire at the New World on College Hill.

    Two teens who ripped a man out of his vehicle before speeding away have been arrested on Auckland’s North Shore. A 16-year-old and a 17-year-old have been referred to Youth Court. Waitematā Crime Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Megan Goldie said at 1.22am, a man was parked on Waratah St in Birkenhead when a group of offenders in a stolen vehicle pulled up beside.

    The coalition Government’s laws targeting repeat offenders and sentence reform will cause the prison population to rise by more than 30% in the next decade, a report has found. The Ministry of Justice’s Justice Sector Projections report shows the prison population is expected to increase by 36% in the next 10 years, from 10,488 in February 2025 to 14,230 in June 2035. It said the population would “increase rapidly” until June 2028 and then rise gradually until June 2035.

    There is a renewed threat of thunderstorms and hail for much of the country today, while snow threatens to close highways in the south. MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane said Northland and Auckland are first in the firing line for thunderstorms, while heavy downpours saturate Otago. A heavy rain watch was issued for North Otago at 9am and is expected to last for nine hours. There is a moderate chance of this being upgraded to warnings due to localised, heavy downpours.
