    STORY CONTINUESPotentially damaging gusts of up to 120km/h threaten to close major roads like the Auckland Harbour Bridge in Auckland this evening and tomorrow in the upper North. Authorities have warned residents to “act now” in preparation for the storm, which could bring the strongest winds to the top of the North Island since 2017. Just after lunch a major road north of Auckland was affected by a fallen tree which brought down powerlines across the path of traffic.

The parents have started a petition and pushing for stricter laws. Two sets of grief-stricken parents want judges to come down more harshly on drug-using drivers who kill and say the “pathetic” home detention sentences do not account for the loss of their daughters’ lives.

    Ella-Rose Donker and Joshua Oliver Dobson – a shearer and father to a toddler – were killed when 21-year-old Jay Allen Mathewson lost control of his vehicle and crashed. Mathewson pleaded guilty to two charges of driving causing death while his blood contained a controlled substance – more than five times the level of MDMA considered a high risk for driving. He was handed down 12 months’ home detention and was disqualified from driving for three years.
