In 2024, former Gov. Pat Quinn found himself with a case of déjà vu. He was campaigning across Illinois, urging voters to approve a ballot referendum recommending a 3% surcharge on incomes above $1 million. It was all so familiar to Quinn, and with good reason: He’d championed an advisory referendum for the exact same proposal a decade earlier. And though it was supported by voters back then, the legislature did nothing. Now, Quinn is back at square one.

Angelina Leshchinskaya and Wendy Acosta both walked into PAWS Chicago’s adoption center at 1997 N. Clybourn Ave. at the same time for different reasons. Acosta, who lives in Portage Park, was sure she was going to adopt and had been doing research to bring home a new friend for her chihuahua, Hazel. Leschinskaya, of Buena Park, was just expecting to browse for what would be her only dog at home.

A Chicago man is accused of trying to steal more than $500,000 in unclaimed property from the state treasurer’s office. Shaheed Tamir, 41, is charged with three counts of theft of government property over $100,000 and 14 counts of forgery for attempting to receive unclaimed property that belonged to two companies he had no relation to, the Illinois attorney general’s office announced Wednesday. Unclaimed property is cash or assets forgotten or abandoned by the owner.

Brookfield Zoo Chicago opened a new exhibit Monday where kids can see bees up close — and even learn what it’s like to be one — with the hope they go home and work to protect them. Located inside the zoo’s Hamill Family Play Zoo, the exhibit features two locally-rescued honeybee hives for observation and a play area where kids can pretend to be a bee.
