I haven't even watched "Heretic." And let's be real - I probably never will. I mean, I'm still not going into my basement alone after watching a Disney Halloween movie about a mummy last month. A psychological thriller about sister missionaries knocking on the wrong door? No, thank you. The trailer alone sent my friend Sara and me down memory lane. We both served as sister missionaries - Sara in Estonia, me in Hungary - and we now juggle kids and life in northern Virginia.

When A. Glenn Brady became pastor of The New Bethel Church in the Northeast neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, in 2009, he had a vision of a congregation that did more than just meet for worship on Sundays. He imagined a church that would work to improve the quality of life for the people living in the surrounding community.

The Anima Christi is said to have been a favorite prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola. In it, Jesus is asked to “call” and “bid me come” when the hour of death draws near. In a contemporary reworking of the prayer, David Fleming makes a more expansive supplication: “On each of my dyings shed your light and your love.”I prefer Fleming’s version. Of course I hope that I will know Christ’s intimate presence on my deathbed. But in the life I live now, I hunger for so much more.

Womanist theologian Yolanda Pierce will be the next dean of Vanderbilt Divinity School.Pierce, a Century columnist, is currently the dean at Howard Divinity School—the first woman to lead the 153-year old institution. Her research focuses on literature and religion, womanist theology, and African American religions. In 2016, Pierce served as the founding director of the Center for African American Religious Life at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Timothy Lee (Photo courtesy of Brite Divinity School) Historian Timothy S. Lee will be the next general editor of the Journal of Discipliana, the scholarly journal of study for the Disciples of Christ and the broader Stone-Campbell movement. Lee will take over from Mark Toulouse who helped relaunch the 82-year-old publication in 2021 after a seven-year hiatus.
