One week ago, my dear friends Cheryl and Tanya and I were having Communion together on a rooftop patio in Jerusalem, Israel, and were meandering around the city commenting on how safe and at home we felt, what a profound gift it was to be in this holy land. This past weekend, war was declared between Israel and Hamas. Hundreds have died on both sides, with many more injured. Leaders have made aggressive statements which have escalated the violence, calling on their military reserves to fight.

I was having a conversation with a group of my clergy colleagues recently. "It can be hard to talk about success in the church," one parish priest noted with dismay. "Nobody wants to hear about it."I could feel my stomach clench as they said these words. We had been sharing about the amazing and successful things each person in the group was doing in their churches. Their accounts were hopeful, exciting, inspiring.

In my recent book, Why Gather? and during the talks I’ve given about it across Canada, I’ve spoken openly about my struggle with burnout in ministry. Although I didn’t want to admit it at the time, I went into 2020 actively wondering if there was something else I could do with my life. With the advent of COVID-19, those wonderings became all-consuming. The pressure and anxiety of juggling so many needs and expectations, and then the sudden free-fall in which we all found ourselves, were too much.
