By Dawson WiseLast week, I talked about how important it would be to see how this team responded after real adversity. Back to back gut wrenching losses are hard for any team to get past, let alone a team that was somewhat thrown together with a first year head coach. The Lady Vols answered emphatically. Now, as another week comes to a close, Tennessee moves to 3-2 in conference play with back to back solid wins against Arkansas and now Mississippi State.

By Dawson WiseLast time, I said losing sucks. It really sucks when you lose in the final moments. How about when that happens in back-to-back games? The last two games have been nothing short of heartbreaking for the Lady Vols. A missed buzzer beater on Sunday was quickly followed by another potential game-tying shot at the horn on Thursday against Kim Mulkey and the LSU Tigers. Much like the game against OU, Tennessee did not get a good start against LSU.

By Dawson WiseLosing sucks. It’s a universal truth in sports. Nobody wants to lose games. This moment was coming, though. Eventually the Lady Vols would drop one. I’d be willing to bet a lot of us had games earlier than this one circled. It could have been Iowa or Florida State or even MTSU, who is a tournament team. I’m not sure anybody expected this team to start 13-0, but they did. They were 1 shot from 14-0, not to mention a statement victory over a top 10 opponent. It didn’t fall, though. It happens.

By Dawson WiseIt was always about SEC play. Nonconference wins are one thing. First year head coach Kim Caldwell had already generated buzz for her 12-0 start. Whether it be for dominant offensive performances or impressive neutral site wins (Iowa back in November), the true measuring stick is how she would handle the gauntlet of this year’s Southeastern Conference. Much like the men’s side, the SEC is the best conference in women’s basketball.

By Dawson WiseThe extended break did not affect the Lady Vols. After going over a week since their last game, Tennessee welcomed the Catamounts of Western Carolina to Food City Center Tuesday. The Lady Vols were dominant in an impressive effort. Fighting through another slow start, Caldwell's group defeated WCU 102-50 in a game that was close for about three minutes.
