With respect to demographics, 58% consisted of male patients and the median age and Inter Quartile Range (IQR) was 68 (57–76). Median APACHE IV probability (IQR) was 0.203 (0.104–0.369), 0.197 (0.098–0.358) and 0.22 (0.081–0.499) for sepsis, infection and inflammatory illness patients, respectively. For characteristics of the three cohorts see Tables 1 and 2. Three-year mortality was 32.7% in the sepsis, 33.6% in the infection and 23.8% in the inflammatory illness cohort.

Carotid sinus massage (CSM) as integral part of cardiovascular autonomic testing, is indicated in all patients > 40 years with syncope of unknown origin and suspected reflex mechanism. However, large practice variation exists in performing CSM which inevitably affects the positivity rate of the test and may result in an inaccurate diagnosis in patients with unexplained syncope.

In 2023, we embarked on an exciting new era of Health Promotion International to which we were appointed as the new Editorial team. Our first editorial in February 2023 argued that we faced a critical time for both people and planet, with the need for bold and transformational thinking from the health promotion community that would challenge the status quo, while embracing core principles of human rights, social justice, health equity and collective responsibility (Thomas and Daube, 2023).

Annals of Intensive Care, Aug 2023 In this narrative review, we describe the most important age-related “syndromes” found in the old ICU patients. The syndromes are frailty, comorbidity, cognitive decline, malnutrition, sarcopenia, loss of functional autonomy, immunosenescence and inflam-ageing. The underlying geriatric condition, together with the admission diagnosis and the acute severity contribute to the short-term, but also to the long-term prognosis.
