For a short time there, we were living the American dream: based at the Pendry Hotel just off Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, commuting through Beverly Hills, organically excellent lunch in Topanga and a gentle cruise through Malibu and Santa Monica in the late afternoon.Nice context for the car we’re here to drive, but also all a bit of a distraction.

Due to what psychologists call illusory superiority, around 80% of people believe they are above-average drivers. I reckon I am likely in the bottom 5%.  This makes me not only a statistical anomaly but, if illusory superiority also applies to me, an appalling driver. Natural fragrances weren’t a thing when Shoemack started, and in its second decade Abel is at the point of taking a major leap forward with an overhaul of the collection and an international capital raise.
